HISTORY

Most of the older Asian people in Wellingborough arrived in the early 1970's, after being evicted from Uganda by Idi Amin. Many others also came from other African countries, the victims of social and political pressure. While many people had enjoyed a good standard of living and had successful businesses prior to this, confiscation of properties and assets meant that their arrival in England was the beginning of many problems. Britain was in the grip of a recession and racist attacks were common. The climate, diet and stress of upheaval added to the struggle for many.

Pravasi Mandal was established in 1984 by a group of Asian men who wished to meet on a regular basis for companionship and social stimulation. Since then, the group has grown into a successful, professional organisation and registered charity, catering for the needs of over 400 members. This is the only organisation in Northamptonshire providing Day Care and support services to Asian elders, and both men and women.

Pravasi Mandal provides Day Care and lunch fives days per week from our newly built centre which was built in August 2002.

The good work and successful track record of Pravasi Mandal have been recognised by many agencies, both locally and nationally. They are strongly supported by Northamptonshire County Council Social Services Department, who provides mainstream funding for running the services. The local Health Authority also provided funding for a minibus for the group to provide accessible transport for users otherwise excluded from the centre. Agencies concerned with the welfare of ethnic minority groups are also involved in many aspects Pravasi Mandal's work and development plans

Pravasi Mandal is affiliated to a number of groups and organisations both locally and nationally from which information is received and disseminated amongst its members. Liaison with these organisations assists Pravasi Mandal's members and supporters to provide effective management and regular reviews of good practice and service evaluation.
